What is Divine Mercy Sunday?

The Divine Mercy Sunday Graces

JESUS’ APOSTLE OF MERCY

Saint Marie Faustina Kowalska was a simple, uneducated Polish nun, who couldn’t even afford to buy her own habit. Unimportant to the world, she died in 1938. Our Lord appeared to her several times a week during her ministry, and in different forms: as the Baby Jesus, as a little boy, as a grown man tortured during His passion, and as He appears on the Divine Mercy painting that is signed, “Jesus I Trust in You.” Jesus said to her, “I am sending you with my Mercy to the people of the whole World. I do not want to punish mankind but I desire to heal it, pressing it to My Merciful Heart.” (1588 Divine Mercy in My Soul)

It was the image of Jesus with the pale white and red rays flowing from His pierced heart (Eucharist and Baptism) that Jesus instructed her to create. “Paint an image according to the pattern that you see with the signature: Jesus I trust in You. I desire that this image be venerated, first in your chapel, and then throughout the whole world.” (47 Divine Mercy in My Soul)

Jesus made several promises to us, through St Faustina. He told her to write down everything He said to her, for the good of those who would come after her. All of this is in her Diary, Divine Mercy in My Soul. This promise takes our breath away!

“My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the feast of mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially sinners. On that day (Divine Mercy Sunday) the very depths of my tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of my Mercy. The soul that will go to confession (and remains in a state of grace) and receive Holy Communion shall receive complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.” (699 Divine Mercy in My Soul) At this time, we are ready for God to receive us!

A Prayer to Receive the Graces of Divine Mercy Sunday

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, you promised St Faustina that the soul that has been to Confession (I have) and the soul that receives Holy Communion with trust in Divine Mercy (I have) will receive the complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. Lord, please give me this grace. Jesus, I Trust in You.

Jesus taught St. Faustina the Divine Mercy Chaplet in September of 1935. He told her to say it unceasingly and especially at the Hour of Mercy, 3:00.

“Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you. … Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. … When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior. … Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My Infinite Mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My Mercy. … Through the chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My Will.” (687, 1541, 1731 Divine Mercy in My Soul)
