With sadness and the hope of resurrection, we announce the passing of Tom Cummings on Sunday September 20th, 2026. Tom was a former parishioner, member of the choir and husband of Val Cummings who was Fr. Bill's Executive Assistant.

We will also be hosting a display of handmade olive wood religious carvings from Bethlehem.  These items will be available for purchase at the main entrance to Holy Redeemer after Mass October 3 & 4 and during the parish picnic. These carvings include olive wood nativity sets, crosses, Christmas ornaments, candle holders, angels, rosaries and many other religious crafts that would make wonderful gifts.  These carvings are handmade by Christian families in Bethlehem who rely on sales for their daily bread.

This year we are looking at a little different approach to Adult Faith Formation.  Over the last several years we have had video-based studies, topical studies, and book discussions. What we have found is that we are still not reaching the number of people that we could.

Many parishioners have shared that there is a need for something a little different, especially for people that cannot attend an eight-to-ten-week study. Some parishioners would like to have an opportunity to simply pray as a community on a weekday evening.

We will Gather for table fellowship, then proceed to some form asking for God’s Grace through Communal Prayer, and finally conclude with an opportunity to Grow in faith through a presentation and facilitated discussion of Sacred Scripture and relevant Catholic Topics.

Gather, Grace, and Grow will occur at Holy Redeemer by the Sea on Thursday Nights from 5:30 -7:30pm. It will be formatted as follows except for monthly adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

5:30 – 6:15 pm: Parish Hall: Table Fellowship - A light dinner provided by various ministries.

6:15 – 6:45 pm: Worship Space: Clergy or Lay-Led Communal Prayer in the Worship Space. Prayers will be bilingual if possible and include Parish Mass intentions.

6:45 – 7:30 pm: Parish Hall or Worship Space: The Group will either remain where they are to enter the grow phase of the evening. A Parish Adult Formation Catechist will lead a discussion of various Scripture or Church topics.

7:30pm: Closing Prayer

On behalf of Bishop Luis Raphael, Fr. John asks for your prayers for the repose of the soul of Fr. Michael Butler, a retired priest of the diocese and former pastor here at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Parish. Fr. Butler passed away at his home in Greenville.

Details regarding funeral arrangements will be forthcoming. Please keep his family and all who mourn his death in your prayers.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

on this Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

     Our national memory will keep September 11 holy for generations to come, as we remember the innocent dead. Our memories of the attack on our nation are intertwined with memories of how we human beings are natural symbol‑ makers. In one parish, as a candlelight vigil ended, the assembly, without being instructed, took their candles and stood shoulder to shoulder, down the steps and along the city streets for a quarter mile. Slowly, people came out of their houses bearing tapers and candles. In the first hours of crisis, we stood vigil, we prayed from the heart, and we celebrated the human ability to draw light out of terrible darkness.

     Stories of that terrible day necessarily drift to tales of heroism, courage, dignity, faith, solidarity, hope, community. The church learned long ago through hard experience that “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.” Perhaps the victims of 9/11 have gifts to bring that we are only just discovering as believers in a just and loving God. They are teaching us still, and today is a day for lighting candles at the table and being silent for a moment before the abundance of God’s gifts. Today reminds us that we are capable of acts of indescribable beauty even in the face of great evil.

We are bringing back the CLOW program to the Sunday 9:00 am Mass at Holy Redeemer! But to do so, we need immediate help from our parish community. We urgently need Leaders and Assistants to step forward so our children (ages 4-6) can experience the Sunday readings in an age-appropriate way.

• Volunteers will serve on a rotating schedule, meaning you only serve once or twice a month. The more volunteers we have, the better the rotation.
• Zero experience needed: We supply you with complete, easy-to-use lesson plans and all activities in advance.
• Safe Environment Training and background check are required.

Please do not assume someone else will fill this need. If you love our parish children and want to ensure they hear God's Word in an age-appropriate way, contact the parish office.
