Five weeks remain of the summer season of Masses. Five weeks remain until Fr. Giovanny is transferred to our Oblate parish in Reston, Virginia. How many weeks remain until school begins? Where did the Summer go? But life goes on here and I would like to update you on a few things happening to the parish.

Jim Wessel and the Safety and Security Committee have delivered the first draft of our required Safety and Security manual for Holy Redeemer. The Committee will present it to the parish on completion. Do we have any health/medical professionals, active or retired, that might be available to assist in an emergency (normally heat exhaustion and the like.)? If so, we might be calling on you to help when needed.  Call the office if you can help.

The parish is investing in a more expanded approach to security.  We will add security cameras on the inside and outside and a more coordinated electronic system of monitoring both buildings and grounds. The cost tag is hovering around the $20K range. You just need to be aware of this expenditure.

We need to replace the 2 bronze 7-branch candelabra set used for Holy Hour at Redeemer as it is beyond repair.  A polished brass 5-branch adjustable set is around $3.5K. This would need to be the result of a donation to the parish. Given our other expenses, I can’t justify spending general parish funds on this. Donation anyone? We have already purchased a set of three-branch candelabra for Holy Trinity thanks to a generous donor.

Two necessary repairs to the road and parking area of Holy Redeemer need to be addressed. More gravel needs to be added, and we need to shore up the western end of the parking area. We can’t put these off; they must be addressed now and we need your support. The gravel cost is hovering around the $9K mark. I have no estimate for the embankment repair. It is good that you are aware of the demands on the budget and your increased support. The yearly financial report to the parish is being written and will be published in October.

On a spiritual note, kudos to the members of the Latino community of Holy Trinity who have offered two separate retreats for the parish in general and the Young Adults in the last month. Hats off also to the Adult Faith Formation for having hosted two “Theological Speakeasy” evenings to address topics in our Catholic Faith. The turn-out was impressive. Thank you!

Many other topics might be mentioned here but, to quote our Lord “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.” ‘Nuf said.’

Letter To the Parish on Faith Formation Changes

August 4, 2026

Dear Parents of Faith Formation Students,

It is difficult to believe that the summer season is almost over and preparations for school and classes are underway. As the parish gears up for its Faith Formation program, several changes are in process. The Bishop has mandated that, in three years, the program will be moved from a classroom-style lecture model to a Youth Ministry model. This change will mandate small group faith-sharing and evangelization groups under the lead of an adult “mentor.” It will be a year-round program and now includes the entire four years of high school ending upon graduation. Preparation to receive the Sacraments, especially but not limited to Confirmation, will be part of this program. Holy Redeemer has been invited to join this diocesan pilot program which is already in process. With this invitation, we will be a significant part of this mandated program change, able to contribute and change now what will become diocesan policy in several years. Uniquely, Holy Redeemer will be extending the Youth Ministry model to include 7^th and 8^th graders, the middle school age. Research has shown the age of 13 is a critical period in questioning the faith and one’s relationship with Jesus and the Church. We hope to address them separately from the high school students. Finally, no changes are being made to the program for the K through 6^th Grades.

Change can be disruptive and the source of questions laced with anxiety. We are starting the search for a skilled, credentialed, full-time Youth Minister to join the staff. We hope to move quickly with the hiring process so we can move into program construction and implementation for the service of helping your efforts to help your children grow in their knowledge and love of Jesus Christ and of His Church so they can be effective evangelists of the Gospel. As with all new things, mistakes might be made. I ask for your patience and your commitment to making this program change a positive experience for your children. Let’s take the leap of faith together that what the Lord intends to plant, it will thrive and produce good fruit to His glory.

Quedan cinco semanas de la temporada de misas de verano y hasta que el padre Giovanny sea trasladado a nuestra parroquia oblata en Reston, Virginia. ¿Cuántas semanas faltan para que comiencen las clases y adónde se fue el verano? Me gustaría informarles sobre algunas cosas que están sucediendo en la parroquia.

Jim Wessel y el Comité de Seguridad y Protección han entregado el primer borrador de nuestro manual obligatorio de Seguridad y Protección para Santo Redentor. El Comité lo presentará a la parroquia al concluirlo. ¿Contamos con profesionales de la salud o del área médica, activos o jubilados, que pudieran estar disponibles para ayudar en una emergencia? De ser así, podríamos recurrir a ustedes cuando sea necesario. Llame a la oficina si puede ayudar.

La parroquia está invirtiendo en un enfoque más amplio para la seguridad. Agregaremos cámaras de seguridad en el interior y exterior, así como un sistema electrónico más coordinado para monitorear ambos edificios y los terrenos. El costo ronda los $20K. Solo necesitan estar al tanto de este gasto.

Necesitamos reemplazar el juego de 2 candelabros de bronce de 7 brazos que se usa para la Hora Santa en Redentor, ya que no tiene reparación. Un juego ajustable de 5 brazos de latón pulido cuesta alrededor de $3.5 mil. Esto tendría que ser el resultado de una donación a la parroquia. Dados nuestros otros gastos, no puedo justificar gastar fondos generales de la parroquia en esto. ¿Alguien quiere donar? Ya compramos un juego de candelabros de tres brazos para Holy Trinity gracias a un generoso donante.

Es necesario atender dos reparaciones del camino y del área de estacionamiento de Santo Redentor. Hay que agregar más grava y necesitamos reforzar el extremo occidental del área de estacionamiento. En un sentido espiritual, felicitaciones a los miembros de la comunidad latina de la Santísima Trinidad que han ofrecido dos retiros distintos para la parroquia en general y para los Jóvenes Adultos durante el último mes. También un reconocimiento a la Formación de la Fe para Adultos por haber organizado dos veladas de “Bar clandestino teológico” para abordar temas de nuestra fe católica. La asistencia fue impresionante. ¡Gracias!

Es posible que aquí se mencionen muchos otros temas, pero, para citar a nuestro Señor: “Aún tengo muchas cosas que decirles, pero ahora no las pueden soportar”. ‘Ya estuvo.’

Estimados padres de familia de los alumnos de Formación de la Fe,

Es difícil creer que la temporada de verano esté por terminar y que ya estén en marcha los preparativos para la escuela y las clases. Mientras la parroquia se prepara para su programa de Formación en la Fe, se están implementando varios cambios. El obispo ha dispuesto que, en tres años, el programa pase de un modelo de clases tipo conferencia a un modelo de Ministerio Juvenil. Este cambio requerirá grupos pequeños de compartir la fe y evangelización dirigidos por un adulto “mentor”. Será un programa durante todo el año e incluirá ahora los cuatro años completos de la preparatoria, hasta la graduación. La preparación para recibir los sacramentos, especialmente, aunque no exclusivamente, la Confirmación, formará parte de este programa. Holy Redeemer ha sido invitada a participar en este programa piloto diocesano, que ya está en marcha. Con esta invitación, seremos una parte importante de este cambio de programa requerido, con la capacidad de contribuir y modificar desde ahora lo que se convertirá en política diocesana en varios años. De manera única, Holy Redeemer extenderá el modelo de Ministerio Juvenil para incluir a los alumnos de 7 y 8 grado, es decir, la edad de la secundaria. Las investigaciones han demostrado que los de 13 años son un periodo crítico para cuestionar la fe y la relación de uno con Jesús y la Iglesia. Esperamos avanzar rápidamente con el proceso de contratación para poder pasar a la creación e implementación del programa, al servicio de sus esfuerzos por ayudar a sus hijos a crecer en su conocimiento y amor por Jesucristo y por Su Iglesia, para que puedan ser evangelizadores eficaces del Evangelio. Como sucede con todo lo nuevo, podrían cometerse errores. Les pido paciencia y compromiso para hacer de este cambio en el programa una experiencia positiva para sus hijos. Demos juntos este salto de fe, confiando en que lo que el Señor se propone plantar prosperará y dará buenos frutos para Su gloria.

The Pastoral Council is conducting a survey to determine the level of interest among parishioners for constructing a columbarium on parish grounds at Holy Redeemer by the Sea in Kitty Hawk.

As you give your feedback, it is important for you to know that cremation is an acceptable choice in the Catholic Church. The cremains (cremated remains) are not to be separated, scattered, or held and must be interred in an appropriate place, i.e. cemetery or columbarium.
