Dear Parishioners of St. John the Baptist Parish and St. Albert’s Mission,


I am writing to bring some clarity to some specific questions which have been brought to me or others at the parish as to how we will be moving forward. This Sunday, May 25th, is the final mass before St. John the Baptist Parish and St. Albert’s mission are suspended, and Mary Queen of Heaven is transferred. The parish and mission are not closing and it is not a permanent move, we simply do not have enough priests to provide for them at the moment. Wherever you go to mass in the meantime, you are still parishioners of St. John the Baptist Parish or St. Alberts mission unless you choose otherwise. This is not symbolic. I am still your pastor, not because you choose to come to Christ the King (if you do) but because you are still members of St. John’s or St. Albert’s and I am the pastor of those Churches.


I understand it is difficult to think of yourselves as members of a Parish or mission that are suspended, but unless we preserve the buildings at St. John’s and St. Alberts as well as the community, which involves real cost and effort, we cannot reopen them when the priests are available to serve. This being the case, wherever you choose to go, you are still free to tithe to your parish. If you come to Christ the King, you are welcome to tithe there as well, but if you put your St. John the Baptist envelope in the collection or tithe online to St. John’s, that money will be used strictly for SJB, not Christ the King. All finances will be kept separate. The same is true if you attend mass at any other parish in the area. 


This also means that Christ the King is not subsidizing the buildings. If we do not receive enough in tithes to keep the sprinklers going, the heat on, or the insurance paid, Christ the King cannot afford to pay the difference.


Here is the breakdown of basic costs 2024-2025 for St. John the Baptist and St. Alberts:

- Priest Medical - $6750 (will be suspended 2025-2026)

- Catholic Mutual Group, Multi-Peril Insurance– $25,331 (10% increase estimated)

- Missoula Electric (SJB) - $3009.47 

- Energy Partners (Propane) - $13,235.08 

- Northwestern Energy (SAG – Electricity) - $549.13 

- Town of Alberton (water) - $1093.26 – average monthly w/o sprinkler is $60 - $80 

- Garbage Disposal - $95/monthly therefore $1140 yearly 

- Internet and Phone – Starlink - $120 monthly therefore $1440 yearly 

- Merchant Bank Fee – Online giving fee approximately $420 

- Snow Plowing - $1277.50 – this depends on snowfall of course

- Webpage - $300 - annual

- Envelopes - $280 - annual


Total Estimated Annual Cost: $54,825.44


Apart from priest medical, all these expenses will continue, though energy costs will decrease. The Multi-Peril is expensive and will increase an estimated 10% annually but it is also even more important to have when the Church is not occupied consistently. As to energy costs, though they will be lower, we cannot simply refuse to heat the Churches, as damage from cold is often as dangerous as water damage. We must keep the churches around 45-50 degrees. 


The funds received from the capital campaign will be held in an account until the parish reopens. I will discuss with the finance council the best way to build those funds (CD, endowment, etc.). 


We have plans to replace the carpet for the parish center at St. John’s but we will wait until reopening, as it will not be heavily used and there is always risk of damage in the meantime. 


For those of you that live outside of Missoula and worry about driving into town in winter, Brother Timothy has committed to bringing communion to the homebound, and is already doing so. 


We will still have mass 1x per year at St. John’s and St. Alberts, on the associated feast days for the parishes. Baptism’s, weddings, and funerals will be permitted by me as pastor, so make sure to reach out sufficiently in advance that I can make myself available (At least 6 months for marriage preparation). We are happy to prepare any couples for marriage at Christ the King, but you are welcome to do preparation elsewhere, I just need to be notified.


Again, I am sorry to be the bearer of this news, but God’s providence is always for our sanctification as Paul reminds us, “We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.” That means that even when we think something is unjust, that fact God allowed it means he can work good from it. We must let him work that good in us, that when St. John the Baptist reopens, it will do so with new life. I hope to continue with you at Christ the King in this time- but either way, know of my prayers.

Christ the King Lenten Mission

Christ the King will be holding their annual Lenten Mission on March 12th & 13th following the 5:15 Daily Mass. Dr. Hanna Hemphill from Carroll College will be speaking both nights. This is a great way to enter into the Lenten season! Dinner is provided both evenings.
